ZouWu is built to need as little data as possible. The free core of the site runs entirely in your browser, there are no user accounts, and the question you type before casting a hexagram is never sent to our servers. This page explains the small amount of data we do handle, why we handle it, and what you can ask us to do about it.
ZouWu is a personal project operated by an independent developer, not a company. For the purposes of data protection law, that developer is the data controller for the small amounts of data described on this page. The only contact channel is hello@zouwu.net, and we answer within 3 business days.
An anonymous device identifier. A random identifier kept on your device, used so that reading counts and pack balances can be tracked without an account. It is not linked to your name, your email address, or any other identifying information — we do not hold that information to link it to.
Reading counts and pack balances. For visitors who have purchased a reading pack, our server keeps an anonymous counter of how many readings have been cast and how many remain in the pack. It also delivers the paid reading content for the hexagram you ask about, and keeps a small request counter used to limit abuse. Beyond these three things, the server does not process anything.
Correspondence. If you email us at hello@zouwu.net, we receive your email address and whatever you choose to tell us. We keep the exchange only as long as needed to handle your request.
Your question. The text you write before a cast is processed locally in your browser and is never uploaded. Our servers cannot see it, store it, or read it back.
Your identity. We do not collect names, addresses, phone numbers, or email addresses — unless you write to us first. There is no account system that could hold them.
Payment details. Purchases are handled by our Merchant of Record, the third party that acts as the seller of record for the transaction and collects payment information under its own privacy policy. We never see your full card number.
Your cast history and other local features are kept in your browser's local storage, on your own device. This data is invisible to us: we have no access to it, and it disappears permanently if you clear your browser data.
The counter data is used for one purpose: to verify your free allowance (the first 6 readings, up to 3 per day), to record and decrement the balance of purchased packs, and to keep the service working reliably. Under the GDPR, this processing rests on the performance of a contract (delivering the packs you bought) and on our legitimate interest in operating a secure, functional service.
Counter data is kept only as long as needed to maintain your pack balance. Correspondence is kept only as long as needed to resolve your request.
We do not sell, rent, or trade data. The only sharing is with our Merchant of Record, to the extent necessary to process payments and refunds.
The site sets no advertising or tracking cookies, embeds no third-party analytics, and runs no scripts that report your behaviour to anyone else. There is nothing for a consent banner to ask about, so we do not show one.
Wherever you live, and in particular if you are in the European Union or the United Kingdom, you have the right to access the personal data we hold about you, to have incorrect data corrected, and to have it erased. Because we hold so little, exercising these rights is simple: email hello@zouwu.net and we will tell you what, if anything, is associated with your device identifier, correct it, or delete it.
If you are an EU or UK resident, you also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
We may update this policy from time to time. The current version is always posted on this page, with the "last updated" date at the top.
